The placement of ports and connectors on the Z87I-Deluxe is designed to deliver all of the functionality while minimizing the hassle of building in a small chassis.

Both the DIGI+ VRM and 802.11ac Wi-Fi Module utilize vertical daughter cards on the periphery of the board, which allows the Z87I-Deluxe to conserve space while enhancing performance. In addition, the 8-pin and 24-pin connectors are also on the edge of the board, making these cables easier to connect, and keeping builds cleaner. The six SATA 6Gb connectors are arranged in two rows of three connectors, with space between the two rows in order to make connecting and disconnecting drives more convenient. And finally, the PCI-E slot incorporates a special Q-Slot latch to make removing dual-slot graphics cards easier.

The TUF Fortifier utilizes SECC (steel, electrogalvanized, cold-rolled, coil), similar to that which is used in PC chassis for its excellent corrosion resistance and ability to conduct heat away from its sources. Fan Xpert 2 is the cooling component of Dual Intelligent Processors 4, charged with calibrating, controlling and monitoring case fans through 4-Way Optimization.

Fan Xpert 2 can test and calibrate each individual chassis fan connected to the motherboard fan headers. The fan headers themselves can both support both 3-pin and 4-pin fans. A combination of form and function, Z87 Thermal Armor has been upgraded to further increase cooling and reduce dust.

The airflow channels created by Thermal Armor provide targeted cooling for critical components such as the VRM, chokes and capacitors. This cooling can further be bolstered by installing the included 35 mm cover and I/O fans. This additional cooling can be optimized for different CPU cooling scenarios. By opening the two airflow valves, greater circulation can be achieved for air cooling scenarios, while closing the valves will focus the airflow into the Thermal Armor channels, ideal for systems using self-contained liquid CPU coolers.

Convection holes placed in key locations around the CPU socket and VRM allow airflow to be directed to the back of the motherboard, where it is then dissipated by the TUF Fortifier backplate.

The surface of TUF Thermal Armor itself helps to minimize dust that settles on motherboard components. To complement this protection is the upgraded Dust Defender, which now includes inserts for nearly all I/O, both inside and out. Dust Defender inserts can occupy unused ports, keeping them free of dust until ready to be utilized.
